How a 5/2 Way Valve Works
Pneumatic ports follow ISO 5599 numbering:
- Port 1: air supply
- Ports 2 and 4: outlets to each end of the cylinder
- Ports 3 and 5: exhausts, one for each outlet
- Ports 12 and 14: pilot signals that shift the valve
In one position, port 1 feeds port 4 and port 2 exhausts through port 3. In the other, port 1 feeds port 2 and port 4 exhausts through port 5.
Why Two Exhausts Matter
A 4/2 valve shares one exhaust between both cylinder ends, while a 5/2 valve gives each end its own. That means you can fit a different speed controller or silencer on each exhaust, so the extend and retract strokes can run at different speeds. It is the main reason 5/2 valves dominate air circuits.
Single Solenoid, Double Solenoid or Air Pilot?
- Single solenoid (monostable): a spring or air spring returns the valve when the coil switches off, so the cylinder goes back to a known position.
- Double solenoid (bistable): one coil for each direction. The valve stays where it was last switched, even after a power cut.
- Air pilot: shifted by an air signal instead of a coil. This is ideal for wet or hazardous areas where electrics are a problem.
Choose the behaviour you want if power or air is lost part way through a cycle.
Mounting Styles
- Inline ported: threaded ports, such as G1/8 or G1/4, on the valve body.
- ISO 5599 sub base: standard bolt patterns in sizes 1, 2 and 3, interchangeable between makers.
- ISO 15407: smaller standard bases, common in 18 mm and 26 mm widths.
- NAMUR: bolts directly onto quarter turn actuators.
- Valve islands and modular systems: many valves on one manifold, often with a fieldbus or Ethernet connection to the PLC.
Keep the Air Clean and Dry
- Fit a filter regulator ahead of the valves, set to the pressure the machine needs.
- Drain the water from filters regularly.
- Decide on lubrication and stick with it. Once a valve has run on lubricated air, it usually needs lubricated air from then on.
Dirty or wet air is the most common reason a 5/2 valve sticks or leaks to exhaust.
Where 5/2 Way Valves Work
- Packaging, filling and labelling lines
- Pick and place and assembly automation
- Doors, gates and guards on machines
- Double acting actuators on process valves
- Food and beverage plants, often with stainless or washdown rated islands
If the cylinder must stop and hold part way, use a 5/3 way valve instead.
5/2 Way Valves Specifications to Check
- Mounting: inline ports, ISO 5599 size, ISO 15407, NAMUR or island type
- Monostable or bistable, and the return type
- Coil voltage, connector and power rating
- Flow rate, often shown as Cv or l/min
- Operating pressure range and lubrication
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a 5/2 way valves supplier, we match the base or island type, the coil and the behaviour, not just the port count. You get OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing 5/2 way valves replacement parts such as coils, seals and blanking plates. We tell you upfront whether a valve is genuine or an equivalent.
