Three Kinds of Safety Valve
- Pressure safety valves: open automatically if the pressure rises too high, protecting air receivers, compressors and pressure vessels.
- Dump and soft start valves: release the stored air from a machine before work starts, then build pressure gently when it restarts.
- Safety rated valves: directional valves built and monitored for use in safety circuits, such as press controls and guarded machines.
Each does a different job, so start by deciding which risk you are controlling.
Pressure Safety Valves
Every air receiver and compressor needs a safety valve set at or below the vessel’s design pressure. When the pressure reaches the set point, the valve lifts and vents until the pressure drops.
- Set pressure: stamped or tagged on the valve, and it must suit the vessel rating.
- Capacity: the valve must vent at least as much air as the compressor can deliver.
- Standards: in Australia, receivers and their fittings fall under pressure equipment standards such as AS 1271.
Never isolate a safety valve with a closed valve, and never plug or cap its outlet.
For hydraulic circuits, the same protection comes from a pressure relief valve.
Dump and Soft Start Valves
A dump valve is usually a lockable 3/2 way valve at the machine’s air entry. Turning it off shuts the supply and exhausts the machine, so no cylinder moves while someone is inside. A soft start valve then builds the pressure slowly when the air comes back, so cylinders do not slam into position. Many fit straight into the filter regulator unit.
Safety Rated Valves
Some machines need valves that form part of a certified safety function. These often have:
- Redundant spools, so one failure does not stop the safe action.
- Position switches that tell the safety controller the valve has actually moved.
- Ratings to standards such as ISO 13849, used alongside AS/NZS 4024 for machinery safety.
Two-hand control valves for pneumatic presses also fall into this group. These valves must be chosen as part of a proper risk assessment by someone competent in machine safety.
Hydraulic Safety Blocks
On hydraulic systems, accumulators store energy that can move a machine long after the pump stops. An accumulator safety block combines a relief valve, an isolating valve and a dump valve in one body, so the stored pressure can be released before maintenance.
Testing and Maintenance
- Test pressure safety valves on the schedule your site and the standard require.
- Check that lifting levers move freely and outlets are clear.
- Exercise dump valves regularly so they do not stick.
- Record the set pressures and test dates on each valve.
Safety Valve Specifications to Check
- Type: pressure safety, dump, soft start or safety rated
- Set pressure and certified capacity, for pressure safety valves
- Port size and thread
- Lockable handle or position switch, if required
- Medium and temperature
- Any certification or safety rating required
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a safety valves supplier, we match the set pressure, capacity and type exactly, because close enough is not good enough on safety equipment. You get clear prices in AUD, OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing safety valves replacement parts such as lockout handles, silencers and seals. We tell you upfront whether a valve is genuine or an equivalent.
