On and Off, Proportional or Servo?
- On and off valves: switch fully between positions. They are simple and robust, and are covered by our directional control range.
- Proportional valves: open by an amount set by the signal, giving smooth ramps and variable speed or force.
- Servo valves: the most precise and fastest responding, used in closed loop control with position or pressure feedback.
The more precise the valve, the more it depends on clean oil, good electronics and careful setup.
Hydraulic Control Valves
Servo Valves
Servo valves respond in milliseconds and control flow with great accuracy. They run test rigs, flight simulators, steel mill gauge control and high performance presses, almost always in a closed loop with feedback.
Proportional Valves
Proportional directional, pressure and flow valves give smooth, adjustable control at a lower cost than servo valves. They suit presses, injection moulding, mobile machines and any motion that needs ramps instead of jolts. Many now have onboard electronics, so they connect straight to a PLC.
High-Speed Valves
High-speed switching valves shift in a few milliseconds. They suit fast cycling machines, sorting systems and short stroke actuators, where response time drives output.
Hydraulic Valves
This is a general range of hydraulic control valves that do not fit neatly into another family, including specialist and legacy designs.
Pneumatic Control Valves
Proportional Pneumatic Valves
These are electronic proportional pressure and flow regulators for air. They set the pressure or flow from a PLC signal, for tension control, welding guns, polishing heads, test benches and soft handling.
Specialist Valves
Safety Valves
These valves protect people and machines. Examples include dump valves that release stored air for safe maintenance, and valves built into safety-rated circuits.
Vacuum Valves
These valves are designed to switch and control vacuum, for pick and place, packaging and vacuum lifting. They seal reliably at negative pressure, where standard valves can leak.
ATEX / Hazardous Area Valves
These valves and coils are certified for explosive atmospheres, such as mines, fuel handling, chemical plants and paint shops. Always match the certification to the zone and the gas or dust group on site.
Electronics Matter
- Signal type: plus or minus 10 V, 0 to 10 V, 4 to 20 mA or fieldbus.
- Onboard or external electronics: onboard electronics simplify wiring, while external amplifier cards are common on older machines.
- Feedback: many valves have a built in spool position sensor for better accuracy.
Our commissioning team can help set up the ramps, gains and feedback, so the system runs smoothly from day one.
Keep the Oil Clean
Servo and proportional valves have tight clearances and small pilot passages, so they need much cleaner oil than standard valves. Servo valves often need ISO 4406 code 16/14/11 or better. Fine, well maintained filters are the best insurance against sticking spools and drifting performance.
Where They Work
Servo and proportional valves are at home in steel and metal forming, injection moulding and plastics, presses, test rigs, mobile cranes and power station turbine controls. Anywhere a machine must move to a precise position, hold an exact force or follow a set profile, these valves do the fine work.
Servo and Proportional Valves Specifications to Check
- Valve type: servo, proportional, high speed or specialist
- Function: directional, pressure or flow
- Size and mounting pattern
- Command signal and electronics, onboard or external
- Flow rating, response time and hysteresis
- Required oil cleanliness, and any hazardous area certification
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a servo and proportional valves supplier, we match the valve, signal and electronics together, so the replacement responds like the original. You get clear prices in AUD, OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing servo and proportional valves replacement parts such as amplifier cards, connectors and seal kits. We tell you upfront whether a valve is genuine or an equivalent.
