Stormwater Pump Stations
Low-lying suburbs, underpasses, levee areas and large sites rely on stormwater pump stations to move water when gravity drainage can’t keep up. These stations often sit idle for long dry spells, then must run flat out during a storm. Level controls start pumps in stages as the water rises, and duty and standby pumps share the work so one failure doesn’t flood the area.
High Flow Pump Types
Flood duties usually need large flows at low head. Axial flow pumps move the biggest volumes with little lift, mixed flow pumps handle moderate lifts, and submersible stormwater pumps suit wet wells and smaller stations. For lower volumes and higher lift, end suction centrifugal pumps may be the better match. Choosing the right type for the flow and head keeps power use down and stops pumps running at the edge of their curves.
Mobile and Emergency Pumping
When fixed stations can’t cope, or power fails, mobile flood pumps fill the gap. Diesel-driven pumps on skids or trailers can be moved to where the water is, then removed when the event is over. Councils, contractors and large sites often keep a few units ready for storm season, with fuel, hoses and fittings stored alongside.
Gates, Penstocks and Flap Valves
Flood control isn’t only about pumps. Flood gates, penstocks and sluice gates use hydraulic cylinders and power units to open and close against heavy loads. Flap valves stop floodwater flowing back up drains. Hydraulic gate systems need clean oil, working accumulators or hand pump backups, and regular exercise so they move when needed.
Keeping Flood Systems Ready
The biggest risk in flood control is equipment that won’t start after months of rest. Exercise pumps regularly, test level controls and alarms, check backup generators and diesel engines, and clear trash screens before the wet season. Telemetry that reports levels, pump status and faults back to a control room lets operators respond before water rises.
What Flood Control Equipment Needs
- Axial and mixed flow pumps: high flow, low head stormwater duties.
- Submersible stormwater pumps: wet wells and smaller stations.
- Diesel-driven mobile pumps: emergency and temporary pumping.
- Hydraulic power units and cylinders: flood gates and penstocks.
- Level controls and alarms: staged starting and early warning.
Related Building & Civil Sectors
Flood control overlaps with other building and civil sectors. Basement and property drainage is covered under residential/light commercial, site dewatering during construction under construction/dewatering, and emergency water supply under fire protection.
What We Need From You
- The application: pump station, mobile pumping or gate hydraulics.
- Flow, lift and the water’s debris and solids.
- Power supply, backup power or diesel.
- Existing pump or power unit details for replacements.
