Deck Machinery
Winches, cranes, capstans, hatch covers and stern ramps all run on hydraulic power. Most use a central power unit or engine driven pumps feeding hydraulic motors and cylinders through directional and counterbalance valves. Loads swing, shock and reverse as the vessel moves, so the circuit needs good load holding and smooth control. When a winch or crane stops, the vessel often stops working too.
Steering and Propulsion
Steering gear uses hydraulic pumps and cylinders or rotary actuators to move the rudder, usually with two independent pump units for redundancy. Controllable pitch propellers and thrusters add their own hydraulic systems for pitch control. These systems are safety critical, so clean oil, tested changeover and reliable spares matter more than almost anywhere else on board.
Engine Room Pumps
Below deck, pumps handle ballast, bilge, fire, cooling water, and fuel and lube oil transfer. Seawater pumps need materials that resist corrosion and wear. Fuel and lube pumps need seals that suit the oil and its temperature. Many duties run in pairs, so one pump can be serviced while the other runs.
Ports and Offshore Platforms
Ports use hydraulics in mooring systems, gangways, ship loaders and mobile cranes, often exposed to spray and weather all year. Offshore platforms add pedestal cranes, launch and recovery systems and utility pumps, where access for repairs is limited and costly. In both settings, spares planning and corrosion protection make the biggest difference to uptime.
Fighting Corrosion
Salt air and seawater attack everything, but some combinations fail faster. Mixing dissimilar metals, such as plain steel fittings on stainless lines, speeds up galvanic corrosion. Water in the hydraulic oil causes rust inside pumps and valves and breaks down the oil. Use stainless or suitably coated components on deck, keep reservoirs sealed with good breathers, and check the oil for water regularly.
What Marine Equipment Needs
- Hydraulic pumps and motors: for deck machinery, steering and thrusters.
- Valves: directional, counterbalance and relief valves for safe load control.
- Power units: compact, marine ready units for deck and steering systems.
- Seawater pumps: corrosion resistant centrifugal pumps for cooling and ballast.
- Hoses and fittings: stainless or coated, rated for pressure and vibration.
Related Sectors
Marine and offshore work overlaps with other heavy industries. Offshore oil and gas production is covered under oil & gas, shore power and port utilities under power & utilities, and ship and platform generation under power generation.
What We Need From You
- Vessel or platform type and the system involved.
