Pressure Valves
Pressure Control Valves
These valves manage pressure in part of a circuit:
- Reducing valves hold a lower pressure in one branch, such as a clamp.
- Sequence valves make one action wait until another reaches pressure.
- Counterbalance valves stop a load from running away as it lowers.
- Unloading valves let the pump idle when an accumulator is full.
Pressure Relief Valves
The relief valve is the safety valve of every hydraulic circuit. It opens at a set pressure and sends oil back to tank, so nothing downstream sees more pressure than it can handle. Direct acting reliefs react fast, while pilot operated reliefs hold a steadier setting at high flow.
Pressure Regulators
In air systems, a regulator holds a steady, lower pressure downstream, whatever the supply does. Combined with a filter, it forms the familiar filter regulator that sits ahead of every pneumatic machine.
Flow Valves
Flow Control Valves
Flow control valves set how fast a cylinder or motor moves by limiting flow. With simple throttle types, the speed changes as the load changes. Pressure-compensated types hold the same speed under changing loads.
One-Way Flow Control Valves
These combine a throttle and a check valve in one body. Flow is restricted in one direction and passes freely in the other, so you can slow a cylinder’s extend stroke without slowing its return.
Two-Way Flow Control Valves
These pressure-compensated flow controls keep flow steady even as the load and pressure change. They suit feed rates on machine tools, hydraulic motors and any motion that must be consistent.
Needle Valves
A tapered needle gives fine, precise adjustment of small flows. Needle valves also isolate gauges and sensors, and bleed pressure safely from test points.
Speed Controllers
The speed controller is the pneumatic version of a one way flow control, and is often fitted straight onto the cylinder port. Most are used meter out, controlling the air leaving the cylinder for smooth, steady motion.
Check Valves
Check valves let flow pass one way and block it the other. They protect pumps from backflow, hold loads in place and isolate parts of a circuit. Pilot operated check valves add a release, so a held cylinder can be lowered on command.
Meter In or Meter Out?
- Meter in: controls the flow going into the actuator. It is good for loads that always push back.
- Meter out: controls the flow leaving the actuator. It is better for loads that can run away, such as lowering or pulling loads, and is the usual choice for air cylinders.
Getting this right is often the difference between smooth motion and a jerky, bouncing cylinder.
Mounting Styles
- Cartridge: screws into a cavity in a manifold block. Compact, and common on mobile machines and power units.
- Inline: threaded ports, fitted straight into a pipe or hose run.
- Modular or sandwich: stacks between a directional valve and its subplate, adding pressure or flow control without extra pipework.
- Subplate mounted: larger valves on their own ISO 4401 or ISO 6264 patterns.
Setting a Relief Valve Safely
- Fit an accurate gauge or pressure sensor near the valve.
- Back the adjuster off before starting the pump.
- Bring the circuit to a safe, stalled condition, such as a cylinder at the end of its stroke.
- Turn the adjuster slowly until the gauge reads the setting, then lock it.
- Never set the relief above the rating of the weakest part in the circuit.

Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a pressure and flow control valves supplier, we match the cavity or mounting, the pressure range and the setting, not just the function. You get clear prices in AUD, OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing pressure and flow control valves replacement parts such as cartridges, seal kits and springs. We tell you upfront whether a valve is genuine or an equivalent.
