Two Families of Hydraulic Motors
High speed, low torque (HSLT): gear, vane and axial piston motors that run fast, often above 1,000 rpm. They usually drive through a gearbox, for example on wheel drives and fans.
Low speed, high torque (LSHT): orbital and radial piston motors that deliver big torque at low speed, often driving the load directly with no gearbox. They suit winches, augers, slew drives and conveyors.
Motor Types
- Gear motors: low cost and tough, for fans, spreaders and simple drives.
- Orbital (gerotor and geroler) motors: compact LSHT motors, very common on mobile and agricultural machines.
- Vane motors: smooth and quiet, for industrial drives.
- Axial piston motors: the most efficient, in fixed or variable displacement, for propel drives and high power duties.
- Radial piston motors: very high torque at very low speed, for heavy winches, shredders and mining drives.
Sizing a Hydraulic Motor
Two quick calculations get you close:
- Torque (Nm) is roughly displacement (cc/rev) × pressure (bar) ÷ 63.
- Speed (rpm) is roughly flow (L/min) × 1,000 ÷ displacement (cc/rev).
Allow for efficiency losses, and check the motor’s continuous and peak pressure ratings against your relief valve setting.
Holding and Braking Loads
Hydraulic motors leak a little internally, so they can’t hold a load on their own. For winches, hoists and slew drives:
- Fit a motor with a built-in brake, or add an external brake.
- Use a counterbalance valve to control overrunning loads.
- Release the brake from the work port pressure, often through a shuttle valve.
Installation Tips
- Fill the motor case with clean oil before the first start.
- Run the case drain straight to tank, with no back pressure.
- Align the shaft carefully, and avoid side loads the motor isn’t built for.
- Flush the lines after any failure, so debris doesn’t kill the new motor.
Hydraulic Motors Specifications to Check
- Displacement (cc/rev) and type
- Continuous and peak pressure
- Speed range and torque
- Flange, shaft and port details
- Case drain and rotation direction
- Brake, valve block or speed sensor options
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a hydraulic motors supplier, we match the displacement, flange, shaft and ports, so the replacement fits both the drive and the circuit. You get OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing hydraulic motors replacement parts such as seal kits, shaft seals and brake parts. We cross reference common orbital and piston motor codes, and we tell you upfront whether a motor is genuine or an equivalent.
