What Makes a Servo Motor Different
- Feedback: an encoder or resolver tells the drive the exact shaft position, thousands of times a second.
- High peak torque: often three times the rated torque, for fast acceleration.
- Low inertia: so the motor can start, stop and reverse quickly.
- Closed loop control: the drive corrects any error straight away.
A servo motor always works with a matching servo drive. Neither one is much use on its own.
Servo Motors on Hydraulic Pumps
On a servo pump, the motor turns a fixed or variable pump, and the drive changes the speed to deliver exactly the flow and pressure needed. When the machine is idle, the motor slows right down or stops. The results can include:
- Big cuts in energy use on presses and injection moulding machines.
- Lower oil temperatures, often with a smaller cooler.
- Much quieter running.
Feedback Types
- Resolver: very tough, and common in hot or high vibration areas.
- Incremental encoder: counts steps from a reference point.
- Absolute encoder: knows its position at power up, in single turn or multi turn versions.
- Digital interfaces: such as EnDat, HIPERFACE or BiSS, which also carry the motor’s data plate to the drive.
The drive must support the same feedback type and interface.
Matching a Replacement Servo Motor
- Read the full code from the motor plate, not just the frame size.
- Note the make and model of the drive it runs with.
- Check the rated and peak torque, speed and voltage.
- Confirm the flange, pilot and shaft (keyed or plain), and any holding brake.
- Match the power and feedback connectors, or plan new cables.
Servo Motors Specifications to Check
- Rated and peak torque
- Rated speed and voltage
- Feedback type and interface
- Flange size, pilot and shaft
- Holding brake and its voltage
- Protection rating and cooling (natural or fan)
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a servo motors supplier, we match the motor to its drive, not just to the flange, so the system runs when you power it up. You get OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing servo motors replacement parts such as encoders, brakes, connectors and cables. We tell you upfront whether a motor is genuine or a compatible equivalent.
