How Automatic Changeover Works
- The duty pump runs while a pressure or flow sensor watches the output.
- If the pump trips, or pressure falls below the set point, the controller raises an alarm.
- The standby pump starts automatically, usually within seconds.
- Check valves stop flow running back through the stopped pump.
- The alarm stays on until an operator resets it, so the fault isn’t missed.
Common Configurations
- 1 duty + 1 standby: the classic twin pump skid. Each pump covers the full duty.
- 2 duty + 1 standby: two pumps share the load, with a third ready for either.
- Duty, assist and standby: a second pump joins at peak demand, and a third covers failures.
- Mixed drivers: an electric duty pump with a diesel standby for sites where power can fail.
For fire protection, the same thinking applies, but under fire standards. See fire pump skids.
Keeping Both Pumps Healthy
- Rotate the duty pump on a timer, daily or weekly, so wear is shared.
- Run a short exercise cycle if a pump hasn’t run for a set time.
- Fit isolation valves on each pump, so one can be serviced while the other runs.
- Log run hours for each pump and plan service on hours, not guesses.
Controls and Alarms
- Pump fail and changeover alarms, local and remote.
- Low pressure, low flow and dry run protection.
- Run hour counters for each pump.
- Hand, off and auto switches for maintenance.
- Signals to your PLC, SCADA or building management system.
- Variable speed drives can be added to each pump to hold pressure steady and save power.
Where Duty / Standby Skids Work
- Water supply and booster stations.
- Mine dewatering and process water.
- Cooling water and lubrication oil supply.
- Chemical dosing on critical treatment lines.
- Hydraulic supply to plant that can’t stop.
For dosing and transfer duties, see process pump skids.
How Much Redundancy Do You Need?
Ask what one hour without the pump would cost. If the answer is a stopped plant, a dry building or a compliance breach, one standby pump is the minimum. If a failure could hit during a planned service, think about a third pump. For a full review of the system around the skid, our redundant pump systems service covers the engineering, and custom skids handle unusual layouts.
Duty / Standby Skids Specifications to Check
- Duty flow and pressure for each pump
- Number of pumps and how many run at once
- Changeover trigger: trip, pressure or flow
- Driver type, power supply and VSD options
- Alarm and communication signals
- Frame size, valve access and connections
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a duty/standby skids supplier, we size each pump for the full duty, set up the changeover logic and build with trusted fabrication partners. You get clear prices in AUD, OEM or equivalent components, and help sourcing duty / standby skids replacement parts such as pumps, check valves, pressure switches and seal kits. We tell you upfront which parts are genuine and which are equivalents.
