Presses and Forming Lines
Hydraulic presses, press brakes, forging presses and extrusion lines all turn oil pressure into controlled force. Most use variable displacement piston pumps for high pressure, with fast approach, slow pressing and controlled return built into the valve circuit. Larger presses add accumulators for fast strokes and prefill valves to fill big cylinders quickly. Modern presses often use proportional or servo valves, or servo driven pumps, to hold tonnage and position precisely from one part to the next.
Rolling Mills and Steelworks
Rolling mills depend on hydraulics for roll gap control, bending and balancing, where servo valves and clean oil hold the strip to tight tolerances. Descaling systems use high pressure water pumps to strip scale before rolling. Behind the scenes, lube oil systems keep mill bearings and gearboxes supplied, and cooling water systems keep rolls, motors and hydraulic oil at safe temperatures. A failure in any of them can stop the whole line.
What These Systems Need
- Piston pumps: high pressure and variable flow for presses and mill hydraulics.
- Servo and proportional valves: precise control of force, speed and position.
- Accumulators: stored energy for fast strokes and pressure stability.
- Coolers and heat exchangers: to keep oil in its working range near hot processes.
- Filtration: fine filters to protect servo valves and pumps from wear.
Heat, Scale and Shock
Steelworks are hard on hydraulics. Radiant heat from furnaces and hot strip pushes oil temperature up, thinning it and ageing seals. Scale and metal fines find their way into reservoirs through breathers and cylinder rods. Repeated pressure spikes from pressing and forging fatigue hoses, fittings and pump parts. Good cooling, fine filtration, a well sealed reservoir and correctly set decompression stop most of these problems before they start.
Saving Energy on Presses
Many presses run their main pump at full speed all day, even while they wait for the next part. A servo pump retrofit or a variable speed drive lets the pump slow down between strokes, cutting power and oil heat. On presses with long idle times, the savings can be significant, and the cooler oil helps the whole system last longer.
Related Heavy Industry Sectors
Steel and metal forming shares many needs with other heavy industries. Mobile fleets and dewatering are covered under mining & heavy industry, processing plants under mining & minerals processing, and transfer and injection duties under oil & gas.
What We Need From You
- Press or mill type, make and model.
- Pump, valve or cylinder part numbers and nameplate photos.
- Working pressure, flow and cycle time.
- Oil type, operating temperature and any recent problems.
Why Work With TSA Hydraulics Engineering
We supply high pressure pumps, valves and cooling together, with engineers who understand how forming loads and heat wear hydraulics. You get honest advice on genuine versus equivalent parts, and technical consultation when a press or mill isn’t performing.
