How a Proportional Pneumatic Valve Works
Most proportional pressure regulators contain a small pressure sensor and two fast acting valves, one to fill and one to exhaust. The built in electronics compare the outlet pressure with the command signal and adjust it many times a second. The result is an output pressure that follows the signal closely, even as demand changes.
Types of Proportional Pneumatic Valve
- Proportional pressure regulators: the most common type, setting the outlet pressure from a signal.
- Proportional flow valves: set the air flow to control cylinder speed.
- Proportional directional valves: control direction and flow together, and are used for simple pneumatic positioning.
- Electro pneumatic converters: turn a control signal into a pilot pressure for process valve actuators.
Signals and Feedback
Common command signals include 0 to 10 V and 4 to 20 mA, and some valves use fieldbus or IO-Link. Many also give an analogue feedback signal of the actual pressure, so the PLC can confirm the valve is doing its job.
Where They Work
- Tension control on paper, film and textile lines
- Clamping and welding gun force on assembly lines
- Polishing, grinding and sanding heads that need steady contact pressure
- Leak testing and test benches
- Soft grippers and balancers for delicate handling
- Spray coating, where the atomising pressure must be repeatable
Getting Good Results
- Feed the valve with clean, dry air, ideally filtered to 5 micron or better.
- Keep the supply pressure comfortably above the highest output you need.
- Keep the tube between the valve and the load short, because large volumes slow the response.
- Avoid oil mist unless the maker says it is allowed.
- Use the feedback signal to raise an alarm if the pressure drifts from the setting.
Manual, Hydraulic or Pneumatic Proportional?
For a fixed pressure that rarely changes, a standard regulator is cheaper and simpler. For high forces, hydraulic proportional valves are the better tool. Proportional pneumatic valves sit in between, and are ideal when air pressure or flow must change often and precisely.
Proportional Pneumatic Valves Specifications to Check
- Function: pressure, flow or directional
- Command signal and feedback signal
- Output pressure range and accuracy
- Flow rate and port size
- Supply voltage and connector
- Protection rating, such as IP65
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
