Vacuum Levels Made Simple
Normal air pressure at sea level is about 1,013 mbar. Every vacuum figure measures how far below that you need to go.
- Rough vacuum, down to about 1 mbar: covers most industrial jobs, such as packing, holding, conveying and drying.
- Medium vacuum, below 1 mbar: freeze drying, degassing and some coating work.
- High vacuum: labs and electronics, which need specialist pumps beyond this range.
Watch for absolute and gauge readings. A gauge showing minus 900 mbar is about 113 mbar absolute, so always say which one you mean.
Pick the Right Type
- Rotary vane: compact and affordable, with oil sealed models reaching a deep rough vacuum. Ideal for packaging and CNC hold down.
- Liquid ring: tough on wet, dirty or vapour laden gas. Common in paper mills, chemical plants and condensers.
- Dry screw: oil free from inlet to outlet, for clean processes and solvent recovery.
- Claw: oil free and efficient, with low maintenance, for central systems and conveying.
Two Numbers That Decide the Size
- Ultimate vacuum: the lowest pressure the pump can reach. Make sure it sits comfortably below your target.
- Pumping speed: how much gas the pump removes, usually in cubic metres per hour.
A pump with the right ultimate vacuum but too little speed will get there in the end, just far too slowly. Size it on the volume of the space, the pump down time you need and any leaks in the system.
Keep It Running
- Change the oil on oil sealed pumps on schedule. Dark or milky oil means the change is overdue.
- Keep the inlet filter clean, so dust does not reach the vanes or rotors.
- Use gas ballast when pumping vapour, so moisture does not condense in the oil.
- Fit a separator or trap so process liquid cannot reach the pump.
- Check the system for leaks before you blame the pump.
Vacuum Pumps Specifications to Check
- The required vacuum level, with its units and whether it is absolute or gauge
- Pumping speed at that vacuum
- Gas type, temperature and moisture
- Oil sealed, liquid ring or dry design
- Motor power, voltage and phase
- Inlet and outlet connections
Why Buy From TSA Hydraulics Engineering
As a vacuum pumps supplier, we convert the units and check the pumping speed before we quote, so the pump reaches your target in time. You get OEM or equivalent options, and help sourcing vacuum pumps replacement parts such as vanes, exhaust filters, oil and service kits. We tell you upfront whether a pump is genuine or an equivalent.
